Tomorrow is Boun Khao Padabdin (Rice Growing Festival) and Boat Racing Festival in World Heritage town of Luang Prabang, Laos. When there is a Boun or Lao Festival, my relatives spend their afternoon making Khao Tom (Sticky Rice in Banana Leaf) to take to their local temple for the Morning Almsgiving (Sai Baht, Tak Baht).
My two aunts in Vientiane, Laos will be making Khao Tom Sai Mak Kuay, which is steamed sticky rice wrapped in banana leaf with sweet banana filling. For a more colorful look and distinct taste, they like to add some black beans to the rice and coconut milk mixture. When there is more free time on hands, my two aunts also like to make a second version of Khao Tom with steamed mung bean as stuffing in the center.
