I’ve been having a craving for Lao Green Papaya Salad with crab for a couple of weeks now. After searching for a fish store with fresh supply of crab I found one in Rotterdam. They don’t carry the small red crab that I used to eating in Laos and I bought one Tourteau Crab. I was searching for video instructions on how to prepare the fresh “alive” Tourteau Crab. Not only had I never cooked crab before, the only time I had killed an animal was a chicken for my pregnant aunt in Laos.
I took the crab to Johan’s mother and we read instructions and watched videos on how to cook it properly. She even offered to help me cook the crab but I had to be the one to put it in the pot. I then told Johan’s mother that I want to take it to Hoek van Holland and release it in the sea. Both Johan and his mother thought the crab would not live to see another day since the water is not its local environment and it would be better just to cook it and eat it. Unfortunately the biggest cooking pot she has was not an induction kind and I told her I would cook the crab at my place.
I cooked the crab under Johan’s supervision and everything went smoothly. The only plan I had was to to make Papaya Salad with Tourteau Crab, just to see how good it would taste.
The verdict? It was delicious and I even made a second plate of it since I didn’t eat lunch and had very little breakfast yesterday. I still have enough of the cooked Tourteau Crab left to make one big plate of Lao Green Papaya Salad with Tourteau crab ( ຕໍາໝາກຫຸ່ງໄສ່ກະປູ Tourteau ) again for lunch today.
