Lunch time at home with Nam Khao or Laotian crispy rice salad. My siblings and I are fond of this appetizer but we eat Nam Khao as a meal. My mother said she knows how to make the deep-fried rice balls but doesn’t have enough free time on the weekend to make Nam Khao for us. We have two aunts who would take order from Lao people and make Nam Khao, Narm Van Lodchong, Lotus Blossom Cookies, and few other dishes for the right price. Many people would order Lao food and dessert from the aunts for a birthday party, a get together or just for eating pleasure.
My mother ordered $10.00 worth of Nam Khao. It was 1 dollar per ball and for $10.00, my aunt gave an extra deep-fried rice ball for the order. There was not much work for me to prepare my lunch. I went to our family garden and picked some herbs and vegetables to go with Nam Khao. I then broke a few deep-fried rice balls into little chunks of rice and then mixed chunks of fermented pork sausage, peanuts, and season the crispy rice salad the way I like it.
The Nam Khao was delicious and I was enjoying my meal on the back porch and viewing our family garden. It would have been more fun fighting for each bites with my siblings but they were at school and my parents were at work, while I was on vacation visiting them. There’s no place like home and home cooked meal. 🙂
