Making Khao Tom Mak Kuay in Pakse

Making Khao Tom Mak Kuay in Pakse

My Aunt Phet and Aunt Nuan in Pakse don’t have a day job and live next door to one another. They are busy taking care of their grandchildren and cooking three meals a day for their family members. When there is a Boun or Lao Festival, they would get together spend their afternoon making Khao Tom from scratch to take to the temple the next day for offering.

Today they are making Khao Tom Sai Mak Kuay (ເຂົ້າຕົ້ມ), which is steamed sticky rice wrapped in banana leaf with banana filling. To give a bit of color and more flavorful taste they are adding a little bit of black bean to the rice mixture.
