Making Khao Thom for Lao Festival

Making Khao Thom for Lao Festival

Today is the day when many Buddhist faithfuls in Laos are making preparation for tomorrow’s Alms Offering at their local temples. I called my relatives in Vientiane yesterday and they told me they will be making Khao Thom to take to the temple tomorrow as part of the merit making for a Boun (Lao Festival).

I was in Laos for last year’s End of Buddhist Lent celebration in Luang Prabang and only watched the local preparing food for the offerings. The last time I sat down to make Khao Thom for Boun Ok Phansa or End of Buddhist Lent festival was back in October of 2008 in Pakse, Laos.

  1. My memory of Khao Thom was in a Tai Dam village in Muang sing District, Luang Namtha, around Pimai Jin. The peopel there traditionally made Khao Thom to celebrate New Year, but it was a version that included a lot of pounded charcoal (from a special tree) deemed to be medicinal.  http://www.pbase.com/kees5/image/100285929 and the next 4 images
