Maak Khor – Livistonia speciosa

Mak Khor (Livistonia speciosa) is one of the edible fruits in Laos. My grandmother loved to eat this fruit with freshly cooked sticky rice. I can still remember how my grandmother soaked Mak Khor in water and then break it apart to eat with warm sticky rice. She would sprinkled a little bit of salt on the fruit to bring out the taste. I have seen other people pickled the fruit for later consumption.

I was at That Luang Market today and saw Maak Khor and can’t help thinking about my grandmother. I haven’t eaten this fruit since I was a little girl living in Vientiane, Laos. I can remember that it has a nutty flavor when I tried a few bites given to me by my grandmother.
