Laundry drying in Luang Prabang

Laundry drying in Luang Prabang

My friend who is a seasoned traveler took a few photos of how laundry is done in Luang Prabang. Many people still hand washing their clothes and drying the laundry on a line or in this case on a bamboom rack.

I still hang my laundry all year round to save energy after washing my clothes in the machine. From a tourist’s point of view, it’s interesting to see the clothes drying in the sun on a bamboo rack.

  1. All along the roads going to LP, I saw a lot of clothes drying. Especially on the weekends when sihns were washed to be worn the following week for school.
I was really lucky and grateful that I had friends that were able to help me in that department since it was very expensive to do it at the guest house I was staying at. I later found out that I hated doing it when I was back in my village. Thank goodness for great friends and many sunny and insanely hot days.

  2. I don’t know how much they charge for doing laundry in Luang Prabang, but in Vientiane it’s about 10,000 KIP per kilo to hand wash your clothes. That’s not much but it can add up and you can get a bowl of noodle soup for breakfast for 10,000 KIP.

I wash all my clothes and all my relatives’ clothes while staying at their houses by hands as well as using a washing machine. The only bad part is when I had to iron the clothes. When it’s almost 40 degrees Celsius with no AC, it’s not so much fun.

You can get someone to come clean your house and do your laundry on a weekly basis for like $40-50 a month in Vientiane. That’s not bad for someone who needs extra money when many people I know that only make $50.00 a month on salary working 5 days a week.
