Time Magazine listed Boun Pi Mai Lao (Songkran) as one of the 50 Cultural Experiences to Try in 2014. For a once in a life time experience, I recommend The World Heritage Town of Luang Prabang as the perfect place to celebrate the Laos New Year or Boun Pi Mai Lao.
As a kid growing up in Vientiane, my parents often told my siblings and I of a “dream trip” to Luang Prabang for Boun Pi Mai Lao. My dream came true when I was able to visit The World Heritage Town during Songkran Celebration in April of 2012.
It was an exhilarating experience for me. Boun Pi Mai Lao in Luang Prabang can be described as a friendly water fights. Locals and foreigners are armed with water guns and buckets, roaming the streets and throwing water at anyone from noon till the sun goes down. Then there are trucks with water tank full of teens and adults alike, cruising the streets through out the afternoon, splashing water and Talcum powder at anyone on their path.
If you do come to Luang Prabang, Laos or any part of the country during the three days festival, be sure to protect your valuables like cell phone and camera with waterproof bag or case. Feel free to be part of the action, get a water gun and go at it!
