I love eating Lao Green Papaya Salad. I even packed a set of mortar and pestle in the suitcase so I can have my monthly dose of Tum Som or Som Tum.

Warm sticky rice goes great with Lao Green Papaya Salad.

It tastes best with fresh tomatoes. In this case I used wild organic tomatoes.

I am fortunate enough to have found green papaya from Thailand or from other tropical countries here. Nye thinks I eat Som Tum almost daily, as stated in her Som Tum Going Inter post. She is quite right!

A couple recipes for you to try: Lao-Style Papaya Salad by Naret Sihavong of Phuket Thai Restaurant, and my own version of Lao Green Papaya Salad.

Enjoy your Lao Food!

  1. I alway look for something about laos, food, people, ect,      I am from laos living in usa. I loved  som tam too, eat 2-3 times a month. your som tum look so good, make me hungry now.

  2. Sabaidee Narong,

Thank you for your visit. Yes, Tum Maak Houng is a favorite for many Lao and non-Lao people. You are fortunate to be able to have your tum maak houng where you are. Some of my relatives that live in the US don’t have store that sell green papaya so it’s such a torture not to be able to eat our food.
