It’s a tradition that after offering alms to the Buddhist monks at That Luang Festival, family members and friends would gather to have a meal before they go home or head off to work.

The must have Lao food is no other than curry rice noodle soup or Khao Phoon and thom kai or chicken soup with additional dishes if possible, provided it’s not over the budget for the special event.

Many people have been complaining about the high food prices like having to buy a whole chicken for $10.00. That’s quite expensive when you make only $50.00 a month on a salary.

When I attended Boun That Luang in 2008, I ate Khao Phoon with my relatives for breakfast and bought. Even back then the food was expensive I thought when a chicken was 80,000 KIPS (8 Euros) with no soup stock and no inner parts of the chicken.

This time I didn’t eat anything because the heat was too strong and I was getting dizzy so I went home for a brunch.
