Khao Poon Nam Pa

Khao Poon Nam Pa

Khao Poon Nam Pa for lunch in Vientiane, Laos. Uncle Khao went on a medical mission with a Japanese NGO and brought some dried fish on the way home. Aunt Phone decided to make a quick meal using the dried fish for the noodle soup stock. It was a simple but delicious lunch for all the family members before heading back to school and work.

The last time I ate Khao Poon Nam Pa was when I was a little kid in Laos. When we relocated to the USA, my mother always made Khao Poon with coconut milk (Khao Poon Nam Kati) and red curry. Khao Poon Nam Pa looks easy to make and I know the secret ingredient is Padek or fermented fish sauce.

  1. This is one of my favorite Lao dishes. I love the combination of fish, coconut milk , noodles and the right heat from the Thai pepper could make this into a perfect comfort food. Keep up the good work!
