Aunt Kian went to Boun That Luang today for the Wax Castle Procession or Haire Pasad Pheung. Before leaving the festivity, she checked out a few food stalls and bought a few pieces of Ping Kai (Grilled Chicken) and Khao Larm (Sweet Sticky Rice in Bamboo Tube) home for the rest of the family members.

Ping Kai at Boun That Luang

There is a saying that if you go to Boun That Luang and not bring home Khao Larm and Ping Kai for yourself and others, then it is like you have never been to Boun That Luang at all. Khao Larm and Ping Kai is part of Lao traditional food at at many festivals held throughout the year, especially Boun That Luang.

As a little kid in Laos, picking out my own Khao Larm from my favorite seller (this grandmother from Wattay village) was a treat that I look forward to each year next to riding a carousel at That Luang Festival.
