Lunch in Luang Prabang, Laos with Kaeng Nor Mai (Bamboo Shoot Soup), Mok Pa (Steamed Fish in Banana Leaf) and Tam Mak Hoong (Lao Green Papaya Salad). For dessert, it was Khao Karm (Black Sticky Rice) with grated young coconut and sprinkled sugar.

I don’t know if Kaeng Nor Mai and Tam Mak Hoong is a good combination but I’m used to eating those two dishes together ever since I was a little kid. My father would want Bamboo Shoot Soup and my mother would want Lao Green Papaya Salad for a meal with grilled chicken or grilled fish. In order to avoid conflict, we would make those two dishes next to Jeow (Dipping Sauce) and everyone can be happy at the dining table.
