Grocery Shopping Pakse, Laos

Morning grocery shopping in Pakse, Laos at Talat Dao Heuang or Pakse New Market. My two aunts were looking for some hoy (shellfish) and Durian fruit in particular.

Going to the market almost daily is quite common in many parts of Laos even with having a refrigerator in the house. Electricity is expensive and many people don’t have a gigantic refrigerator like many of us in the western countries. They usually have a small fridge just enough to keep a few essential things like drinks for example. Grocery shopping is also a social things from what I can tell. Shoppers would stand around talking to their friends and the merchants, asking about how things are rather than rush through the market, grab what they need and rush out.
