When I go home for summer break I would make a list of what I want to eat. Since I started to enjoy fish I would ask for my parents to make what I thought the name was Laap Pa. My father would tell me that it is called Goy Pa and not Laap Pa.
After I left home for the Netherlands my parents started to make good Lao dishes that they never made before. It was always a nice surprise to go home for a great meal. Since I wanted to eat goy pa I had to be the one doing all the cooking and my mother would walk by and tell me what seasonings to use and how to make the soup and the dipping sauce.
It is a good way to learn how to cook with someone watching over your shoulders.
