This is my 5th days in Laos and the first day in Pakse. I didn’t sleep much last night due to being in an unfamiliar place. I was the first one to get up in the house and spent the early hour checking out Tou Yar’s garden.
Tou Yar planted some herbs, banana trees, a gooseberry tree (Thon Maak Yom) among other edible fruit trees. I was told there are two kinds of this tree, one type is sweet while the other is sour. This Maak Yom is the sour kind and is ready for picking whether to eat it raw or pickle for later consumption. The leaves are used in the making of Som Moo (Sour Pork or Fermented Pork Sausage) by the relatives now and then.
