Food at Vientiane Boat Racing Festival

Vientiane Boat Racing Festival is a favorite time of the year for all my relatives to gather at Wat Chan for food and fun. My uncle would hang out at the Mekong River bank everyday in the weeks ahead of the big boat racing day to watch the various teams during their practice time. On the day of the Boat Racing Festival like today, he would get up extra early to attend the festival with my cousins.

There are plenty of food vendors selling various Lao food dishes, drinks, and snacks along the streets near Wat Chan and at the Mekong River Park. One can snack on Miang Muang Luang, Fried Beef Meatballs, Baby Duck Eggs or other nibbling things. For a quick meal, it’s Khao Larm and Ping Kai or roasted chicken with Lao Green Papaya Salad. At the end of the day, it’s convenient to buy a few dishes to take home for dinner and share stories about the exciting boat races and make prediction on which team will win next year’s title.
