The most memorable time in Luang Prabang for me was the boat ride on the Mekong River to Pak Ou caves. While some tourists might see this tour activity as a “tourist trap” which I do agree, the experience of being in a boat and watching the scenery and people along the way to the Buddha Caves itself is worth every KIP. Then taking an hour private tour on a boat to watch the sunset on the Mekong River in Luang Prabang was the next best time for me during my last trip to Laos.

If you are planning on visiting Luang Prabang I encourage you to take a boat tour to Pak Ou Caves and enjoy the ride. Pack some food with you and a bottle of water so you can just snack during the three hours trip. The best time to go is in the morning and you can be back in time for lunch in the town and if you are short on time then you can take an afternoon trip to Kuang Si Waterfalls and make the best of your day.
