Pun Pa for Lunch in Vientiane

Pun Pa or Fish Wrap is a Lao dish I tend to eat during my last trip to Laos. This meal could cost between 20 to 25 Euros to feed seven to eight people when buying ready to eat set from a market in Vientiane.

I can remember spending a little over 20 Euros back in November of 2008 during my two months visit to Laos for a prepared set of Pun Pa. That is quite expensive for a Lao standard meal according to a relative who makes 50 Euros a month on a salary.

On day 37 of my two months in Laos, I started out with green aubergine chutney and fried eggs for breakfast. Then it was more green papaya salad for lunch as well as dinner. The best part was having Lao BBQ style chicken with Khao Larm to go with the papaya salad. That’s like a classic Lao meal.

What was served on day 36 of my two months in Laos. As much as I like Lao green papaya salad, Bamboo shoot soup is also my favorite Lao dish but I prefer to have it with no meat or fish and mostly with mushrooms and vegetables.

Taste of Lao Food on day 35 of my two months trip to Laos. My favorite dish was no doubt the spicy and delicious Lao green papaya salad aka Tum Maak Houng. I just couldn’t get enough of that good stuff no matter where I am. Of course, it’s a lot cheaper in Laos.

Taste of Lao Food on day 34 of my two months trip to Laos. Breakfast was my favorite with fruits. I’m not a big fan of meat but I usually eat what was put on the table. The relatives love to eat meat and fried stuff so I tried my best to not make a fuss since so many people in Laos are starving and they would love to trade place with me.

For dinner my aunt made mushroom soup and some sort of salad with lots of onions. I only picked out the carrot but the onion was quite strong. I’ve seen this type of salad at the local market and it’s quite popular using a type of salami that is often put in Khao Jie Pate.

We had a big lunch as always with Ping Kai and Ping Ped next to Som Moo to go with Lao Green Papaya Salad. I didn’t care for other dishes and made my own Tum Maak Houng just the way I like it and ate it all by myself since others got to have their garlic and MSG in it.

For breakfast on day 32 of my two months in Laos, Aunt Kian bought Khao Jie Pate for me. Som Moo brought back from Pakse made especially for us by the relatives was also added to the table on that morning. This Som Moo is well known in Pakse and was made from the best ingredients and only using salt and garlic for flavor.

What we had for dinner on day 31 of my two months visit to Laos. Let’s just say I was not starving at all and even when I was not hungry the relatives made sure I would always eat something to feed my cold/flu.
