Rapenburg Canal the best place to hang out for free concerts organized by either the town of Leiden or the University of Leiden. What a way to have fun with your friends in your own little boat, only if you know how to swim that is. I can imagine many people falling in the water after hmm… a few bottles of Heineken.
What is there to do on a late Friday afternoon when you are a poor student? Taking a walk around town doesn’t cost a thing and it is also a good and fun exercise. Here I was walking toward Rembrandtbrug en Molen de Put (Rembrandtbrug and Windmill de Put).
Morsch Poort, built in 1669 is one of the remaining Leiden city gates. It’s nice to sit around here and watch people passing by on a lazy Friday afternoon or any afternoon, weather permitting that is…
Rapenburg Canal is well known as the most beautiful canal in the Netherlands. With beautiful with stately houses that were built in the 16th and 17th century by rich families.

After a few hours of walking, begining at the Faculty of Social and Behavior Science, I ended up at Leiden University garden. It was 17:15 hour so I decided to order a cup of tea and a slice of cheesecake and sat at the garden cafe. I wanted to have a garden salad but they didn’t have it on the menu. It was nice to just sit there and rest my poor legs.
The last time I was there in May, the area was going through a construction. By the time I finished with my cheesecake and tea it was 17:33 hour and when I checked the opening and closing time for the garden, it was too late to buy a ticket (free for students of Leiden University). People were exiting through the gate and I decided to check out some plants near the entrance before the garden closes at 18:00 hour.

After a visit to De Burcht, I headed toward the direction of Leiden Law School, which is near the university botanical garden. Over the Corn Bridge is Wedding Street and there was a wedding taking place. Then it was a couple of quick shots of my favorite building in town, what else but the university book store. No more running to this place to reserve text books anymore.

If you ever come to the Netherlands, then add Leiden to your list of places to visit. It’s not so far from Amsterdam and a good jumping point to go to the tulip fields or the beaches in Katwijk or the Hague. After a hike up the hill to the Burcht, then you can have a drink at the foot of the hill.

De Burcht gives a nice view of Leiden and free admission makes it even more attractive to hike up the few steps and takes some good pictures while you are walking around. Here is what the inside of the Burcht looks like and a view of Leiden center.

With enough pictures of the Hooglandse Kerk to show my relatives I headed back toward the Corn Bridge and went to check out the gateway where all the tourists were taking photos and talking in languages I didn’t understand. I decided to follow them to see what is hiding behind these buildings. But first I was distracted by this bicycle. I’m going to have to get one of these when I have a couple of kids.

After taking enough photos of the Koornbrug, I decided to cross the bridge to and went into one of the side streets, just to see what’s on the other side. As fate would have it, the street came to an end and merged into two ways street and I saw the Hooglandser Kerk (Hooglandse Church) on the right side . By this time the wind was getting so strong and it was difficult to hold the camera. It was getting too chilly for me but I was glad to be wearing my jacket. I tried my best and took as much pictures as I could before heading for a warmer spot in the city.
