Last Friday I went to Leiden University Faculty of Social and Behavior Science (Faculteit der Sociale Wetenschappen) building to make final arrangments for my graduation in October of this year. There were few students there to check out the place before the new school year. For those that arrived early they can take part in the early orientation which started yesterday. Inside the FSW building there was a renovation project going on and I had to be careful walking in the middle of all the construction.

I have marked my calendar for the Faculty of Social Science graduating ceremony on October 10, 2008. The Master of Political Science (MPS) students will be individually recognized for their completion of the program. For those that will not be completing their degree requirements by August 31, 2008, they will have to register by September 1, 2008 for another term and can still graduate either in November or December of this year.
As for this moment I have no idea where the graduation ceremony will take place. The students from the Honors Class last year had their graduation ceremony at Hooglandser Kerk or Hooglandse Church. Below are the photos from the day time ceremony.

May was a very hectic month at Leiden University. Between preparing for Final Exams and completing the Thesis, we were busy with student elections for next year. From May 7-22, we were greeted with candidates from various parties, courting for our votes. Voting is secret ballot with students login on with their username and password and casting their votes.

Once or twice a week I had to attend a course at a small building next to the Faculty of Social and Behaviour Science. This particular building was added an an extension because of the oversized classes. It is also used for adult learning program. From the outside it reminds me of a school building in Laos but more modern. Whenever I go inside this building I think of the school building project in Laos and how I want to build a school using this model.

The majority of my classmates (international students) stay at Hooigracht, a former hospital. If I had to choose one of the student apartments near the university, this would be my first choice. I knew a girl who used to live there for two years until she moved in with another student with her own apartment across the street from Leiden Centraal Station. Each time I visited her, I was fascinated by the charming characteristics of this historical monument.

On June 06, 2008, the new student water sport center was opened officially. I didn’t get a chance to visit the place since it was the day to turn in the final version of our Master Thesis. From the photos posted on Leiden University website, the building is beautiful and situated at the right location with the view of the Dwarswatering, the green heart and the club house of Asopos the Vliet. The lucky 89 students will be living above the boat houses. It’s a perfect home for these students with their love for water sports.

I like to hang out at Hortus Botanicus Leiden Green House whenever I can. During the summer months it is too warm to be inside the green house. I like to visit the place because of the tropical plants and flowers on display. They remind me of Laos, especially the water lilly and few plants that we used to grow on our lawn in Vientiane.

On April 10, 2008, we were invited by the Honors Class to attend a special lecture at the Faculty of Law. I didn’t even know where the law building is at but have met many Chinese students from that faculty at the beginning of the year during the registration process.
After searching on Google map I found the location of the faculty of law which is only a few meters from the international office. Below are some photos from the university website of Leiden University Faculty of Law. I particularly like the photos of the library with rows of computers for the students and the sun roof.
