For lunch it was tum maak houng or green papaya salad from Gok Pho market and grilled chicken from down the street. Well, it was more like certain parts of chicken that I was not quite fond of unless it is chicken liver from Go Chicken Go.
We came back from Gok Pho Market with plenty of green papaya salad to go with fried catfish and some fried banana for dessert.
I didn’t eat breakfast. Aunt Phone asked me what I would like to have for lunch and I said to her I would like to make photos of fried catfish. Then I thought it would be a good exercise to walk to Gok Pho market after the rain has died down. The cousins and I went off to get green papaya salad to go with the fried catfish.

We had a nice lunch and ate what Khek and I bought from Gok Pho Market. After lunch we talked about what was taking place in Pakse. When it started to rain Aunt Phone called Pakse to make sure the funeral was not being hampered by the rain.

We arrived at Hor Wattanatham (Lao Cultural Hall) around 4:00 PM. There was already a big crowd there for the 3G M-Phone Concert. Lao Telecommunications has just launched the first 3G network in Laos, starting in the capital city and everyone wanted the new mobile numbers with M-Phone. The numbers went so quick according to an employee from M-Phone. The publicity worked wonder since there were so many people there buying their new cell phones and getting their must have new mobile numbers so they can me among the “coolest cats” in town.
We decided to eat dinner early while waited for the concert to start. After playing all the free games, getting all the free drinks, it was time for real food. Ban Lao Restaurant is next to Lao Cultural Hall and they had a table set up selling tum maak houng and ping kai (more like the inner parts of the chicken).
After lunch, it was nap time for me and Sidney. We were both so worn out that we slept until 4:00 PM. When we woke up it was early dinner for me at 4:30 PM and snack time for Sidney. I wanted to check my emails at an internet cafe so Aunt Kian made grilled duck and bought Green Papaya Salad and Miang Muang Luang from Gok Phot Market. I don’t like to eat duck and only went to the tum maak houng and miang.

A continuation of my two months trip in Laos. It was October 20, 2008 and day 15 for me in Laos. Things have not been going well the last couple of days with my system under attack and I can’t recall being this miserable before. I wanted so much to be able to sleep for a few hours but it seemed impossible to get any rest at night with the constant coughing. The day time is not as bad with enough medication to ease the suffering. For breakfast today it was hot tea and dragon fruit and more cold/flu liquid drink to get me through the morning.

I made friend with a water buffalo that was tied to a tree by the house while waited for lunch. Aunt Phone and Uncle Khao brought back some tum maak houng to add on to bamboo shoots soup, made especially for me.
When Mair Mit and I returned from Sikhay Market,we put the food away and went straight to Gok Pho market. We didn’t walk there this time because everyone would be home for lunch. In Laos many students and workers would go home during lunch time because it’s more economical. It’s also a good idea when the weather is too warm so you can take a shower and change into a new set of clothes. There are not too many offices or schools that have AC in Laos.

Since my relatives back in Vientiane were celebrating Chinese New Year, I didn’t want to feel left out and joined the celebration by having my own little party. I went to the local Chinese grocery store and stocked up on a few things. I then made som tam or tum maak houng, however you want to call it for lunch, with water spinach and brown rice vermicelli on the side.
