Papaya Salad with Raw Crab in Vientiane

papaya salad with raw crab

Lunch in Vientiane with Lao Green Papaya Salad with Raw Crab, made by my favorite Tum Maak Houng maker at Gok Pho Market. She has no cooked crab and added the raw crab from the raw padek or fermented fish sauce bucket. The papaya salad itself has no garlic and no MSG and used cooked padek and crab paste. We ate the papaya salad with roasted chicken, soured pork sausage, pork rind, and vermicelli rice noodle or khao poon.

Morning Grocery Shopping in Luang Prabang

There is something about doing grocery shopping in Laos. It’s not boring like in Holland or in the USA with pushing the shopping cart down the aisles and selecting fruits and vegetables all packed in a nice plastic containers or in boxes. Whenever I am in Laos I would volunteer to go to the local market for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. It’s fun to meet the friendly faces and make new friends or chat with familiar faces.

To cool myself down I often turned to Lao Iced Coffee and thought about the time of when I was a little kid in Laos when my mother would buy Lao Iced Coffee at the Morning Market in Vientiane and allowed me to have just a sip or two. Dao Coffee in Luang Prabang is one of the places that I went for a nice…

Marian Plum with Chili Dipping Sauce

I haven’t eaten Marian Plum since 2010 so it was quite a treat for me to find them in season. There are two types of Marian Plum, one is sweet and the other is sour. What to do with sour Marian Plum? I like to eat it with chili dipping sauce as snack alone or with slice of young green…

Grilled Food at Luang Prabang Evening Market

During my vacation in Luang Prabang, I didn’t eat out at a restaurant that much and often went looking for grilled food at Luang Prabang Evening Market. The evening market is not as packed like the morning market but there are enough food vendors and merchants selling various things and this is where the local people go for their small evening grocery shopping and ready to eat Lao Food dishes like grilled fish, poultry, meat, dipping sauce, roasted chicken, or boiled chicken head and feet.
