I was so fond of the Gouden Regen (Laburnum) or Golden Rain Tree that I found on my way back from Hoek van Holland beach that I made a mission to look for more of them. I even found two trees next to one another with one having yellow flowers while the other having purple flowers. Sorry the photos of those two trees didn’t turn out real well. Maybe next time.

Gouden Regen (Laburnum) or Golden Rain Tree comes in a few varieties in the Netherlands.

Laburnum alpinum: This golden rain tree has intoxicating smelling flowers in the month of June. The alpinum are very hardy and can grow as high as 7 meters.

Laburnum alpinum ‘Pendulum’: As the name suggested, this golden rain tree is a small pendulous tree with depending branches, like an umbrella. It has heavily scented flowers in the month of June.

Laburnum anagyroides: This common laburnum have flowers with no smell. The flowers are in full bloom in the month of May and June.

Laburnum watereri ‘Vossii’: This golden rain tree is the most well known and it is planted the most in the Netherlands. The flowers have no scent and they are in full bloom in the month of May and June.

Laburnocytisus adamii: This type of tree is a hybrid of the Cytisus and golden rain tree (laburnum). The tree doesn’t grow higher than 4 meters. There are two types of flowers in yellow and pink at the same time.

As far as I know most of laburnum if not all are poisonous, especially the seeds and they look like peas. I want to plant them someday in my garden (whenever I have one) but it might be too dangerous for small children since they might eat the seeds.
