Home away from Home
I have to admit that when it comes to love song, I am more into sad songs. Maybe it’s because I don’t know much about love and coming from a broken family, I don’t believe in a fairly tale love story. Perhaps I like sufferings and sad songs are my tunes. If I have to pick one love song to respond to Amphone’s post I would pick Jom Jai Khon Jon. It is a Lao song that I found out it was written for my Mama. Someone loved her so much to have written this song for her and she was the one and only Jom Jai Khon Jon for that particular man. Mama was this definition of “Jom Jai Khon Jon. ” Maybe someday there will be a man that would think I am his Jom Jai.
She was his Jom Jai

You look so much like your mom.

Hi Dallas,
When I was younger I didn’t look anything like her even when I was a little kid. My other sister was more like my mother and my mother often said I look like my Papa and manly looking, lol.
Strange how as I get older and older, I’m becoming more like her clone. I have her eyes for sure.

DJ,
Wow! Every woman would love to have a man write a song about them. That is what you call a compliment. My mom named me after a song. I noticed that the musician has my first name and spelled exactly the same way so weird. I guess I have a male name. I think Anousone means souvenir or gift or at least the loose translation of it!

Wonderful comment Karmadiva. I hope DJ won’t mind me rambling on and on on her site. I think you should know that the Laotian word Anousone, the meaning is much much more powerful than the English word, souvenir, it should be a monumental of love but not a monument. A souvenir is a thing or something you can buy or acquire to remind you of a place you visit. Anousone is a state of being, it something you feel in your heart. This song is (pen anousone hang kwam hak) an anousone of love of this man for DJ’s mama. His love for her is forever. It’s will be left behind to remind the world how much he loves DJ’s mama. When or if he decided to build a monument to honor his love for her, the place would be a thing call an Anousavali (a monument). Your name is beautiful. Anou is a man’s name. Anousone when use as a person’s name then becomes a girl’s name. My name is a girl’s name. I can’t get a straight answer from my parents as to why they gave me a girl name. My Uncle who was a prominent monk wanted to name me Jithakhone.
Well, I am going to be the first man to write a song for DJ then. How wonderful it is to know that this song was written for DJ’s mama. DJ, I like the way you call your mother, mama.
Manith had this song re-recorded in the early 90’s. I was so touched by it. I learned to sing it with care. From there on, singing became a sensation to me. I started to learn one Lao song after another. Jom jai kon jon, is a song I sang for miss right while waiting for her to come in. I will continue to sing this song until miss right crashing through that door.
DJ, if you still want to call me ai, you can. I would like that.

Amphone,
Thank you for that information about the meaning of my name. It sounds much better the way you explain it. I used to not like my first name but now that you explain to it it makes more sense and I am proud of it. Amphone does not sound girlish.
DJ, your mom has a sweet innocence about her and I can understand why a man would want to write a song about her.:)

Hi Amphone,
I think many of the Lao names are unisex, especially the one with "Boun" in it. That is just based on my observations so I can be wrong. I have an aunt by the name of Amphone as well in Vientiane.
Karmadiva,
I think your name is one that can be for both male and female. It’s all about in the meaning really and to have a name with significant meaning and so much love and devotion around it is worth so much more.
My Mama was/is a sweet and tough lady. I’m just a whining baby.
